What is Franchising?

Franchising is a business strategy for getting and keeping customers by using another firm’s proven business model. It is a marketing system for creating an image in the minds of customers about how the company's products and services can help them. With the help of the franchisee, the franchisor is able to build profit centres all over the world. The franchisor‘s success depends on the success of the franchisees.

Essentially, and in terms of distribution, the franchisor is a supplier who allows an operator, or a franchisee, to use the supplier's trademark and distribute the supplier's products and services. In return, the operator pays the supplier a fee. The franchisee has a greater incentive than a direct employee because he or she has a direct stake in the business.

In short, franchising is a strategic alliance between groups of people who have specific relationships and responsibilities with a common goal to dominate markets, i.e., to get and keep more customers than their competitors.
