Long ago, in Northern Europe people decorated their homes with evergreen fir branches in the winter. They hung apples, nuts or stars made from straw on them. It was to remind them that after the dark, cold times, the sun would return and make the world green again. Over time, the tradition of the Christmas tree developed from this.
